According to police, the blast took place at the Jama Masjid of Kocha Risaldar in Qissa Khawani Bazaar where a suicide bomber entered the mosque and blew himself up.
The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a mosque, firing on police and other worshipers.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailant blew himself up in front of the pulpit and after the blast, human organs were scattered all over the hall of the mosque.
The bodies and injured were shifted to different hospitals in the city. According to the hospital administration, 57 people were martyred and 194 injured in the blast.
The administration said that 56 bodies were found at Lady Reading Hospital and one at Hayatabad Medical Complex Hospital while 194 were injured at Lady Reading Hospital and 2 at Hayatabad Medical Complex.
A spokesman for Lady Reading Hospital said the condition of some of the injured was critical.
According to the spokesperson, timely medical facilities have been provided to the injured and medicines, medical personnel and blood supply have been ensured.
