According to the official news agency APP, under the relevant provisions of the 1960 Indus Water Treaty, this meeting is held annually in Pakistan and India and in this regard the 118th two day meeting of Indus Commission of Pakistan and India in New Delhi, the capital of India. Was held.

The six-member Pakistani delegation was led by Syed Muhammad Mehr Ali Shah, Indus Water Commissioner of Pakistan, while the Indian delegation was led by AK Paul, Indus Water Commissioner of India.


According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office Spokesperson on Tuesday, Pakistan and India discussed water related issues including flood information sharing in advance, visit / inspection program and the year ending March 31, 2022. The report was signed by the Permanent Indus Commission.

During the meeting, Pakistan raised its objections to India's hydroelectric projects on the western rivers, while Pakistan's objections to Indian projects, including Pak Dal, were also sought.

The meeting urged India to provide advance information on floods in accordance with the provisions of the agreement and the current practice from 1989 to 2018.

India arranged for post-flood visits / inspections at the meeting as well as assured that Pakistan's outstanding objections would be discussed at the next meeting as it was still reviewing the details.

Both sides reiterated their commitment to implement the Indus Water Treaty in its true spirit and expressed the hope that the next meeting of the Commission would be held in Pakistan as soon as possible.

The Pakistani delegation went through the Wagah Attari border last Sunday to attend the talks.

Negotiations on the Indus Basin Agreement between the two countries have taken place at a time when there are positive reports of early arrival of monsoon in the Indian state of Kerala.

This is the second Pakistani delegation to visit India in the last few weeks. This month, a Pakistani delegation attended a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the Regional Anti-Terror Structure in New Delhi.

In March this year, an Indian delegation led by Water Commissioner PK Saxena visited Islamabad for talks.

During the talks in March, the Indian delegation emphasized that all its plans were in accordance with the provisions of the Indus Water Treaty and provided technical details in support of this position.

The two countries also discussed the issue of waste drains and Pakistan assured that all necessary steps would be taken to ensure the flow of waste drains in the Sutlej River.

Under the 1960 Indus Water Treaty, water from three eastern rivers Sutlej, Beas and Ravi is given to India for unlimited use while water from three western rivers Indus, Jhelum and Chenab is given to Pakistan.

India also has the right to generate electricity through projects on three western rivers. Pakistan raised objections to the design of Indian hydroelectric projects on the western rivers under the 1960 agreement regarding the specific design standards of these projects. Maybe because many problems have been solved in the past.
