Massachusetts-based Modrena developed messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine technology just over a decade ago, which allowed it to develop a Covid-19 vaccine at an unprecedented speed.

The German company BioNTech was also working on this technology in collaboration with the large American pharmaceutical company Pfizer.

The US Food and Drug Administration first approved Pfizer/BioNTech's emergency use of the Covid-19 vaccine in December 2020, followed by Modrena a week later.
