Darwin Nunez will be suspended for Liverpool's next fixture - against Manchester United on August 23 at Old Trafford.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Darwin Nunez has been suspended for three matches
  • Jurgen Klopp said Darwin Nunez was provoked all the time
  • Luis Diaz came to Liverpool's rescue and earned them a point

Darwin Nunez had a home debut to forget for Liverpool during a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at the Anfield stadium as the striker lost control in his first competitive start for the Reds.

Nunez had a jostling with Crystal Palace's Joachim Andersen off the ball and he thrust his head into the face of the Palace defender. With the referee watching on close by in the 57th minute, the red card was immediately slapped on Nunez's face.

The Liverpool striker had to be calmed down by his teammates as he attempted to confront the referee. Klopp then blanked Nunez as the latter headed down the tunnel.

"It is a red card," Klopp said. "He was provoked all the time but that is not how to behave."

For Liverpool, Luis Diaz came to the rescue as a goal by him helped the Reds to a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Monday.

Nunez was able to display his goalscoring ability during the Community Shield against Manchester City and Fulham, partially because Roberto Firmino was missing through injury. Nunez missed an early opportunity against Palace by miscuing a close-range volley at the back post and then hit the post from a similar range in the final minute of the first half.

When the jostling near the penalty area of Palace happened, Nunez threw his head back at Andersen and missed. The Liverpool striker then turned into the Palace defender and butted him square in the face. A 10-man Liverpool still dominated the possession and four minutes after the red card was handed to Nunez, Diaz earned his side a point.

Sometimes you need a moment of brilliance," Liverpool midfielder James Milner said, "and when you have players like Luis on the pitch, he can create something out of nothing. It was an incredible goal."

Liverpool have now drawn their first two games, having being held 2-2 by Fulham in the first match. The Reds are four points behind Manchester City and Arsenal. Nunez will be suspended for Liverpool's next fixture - against Manchester United, who have lost both of their games, on August 23 at Old Trafford.
