According to Humane Society International, an activist named Huang said that he was shocked to see the condition of the cats, many of them were anxious and screaming.
"It was also a big shock for us to free dozens of sparrows that were used as bait to lure cats," he said.
Most of the rescued cats were pets and have been sent to local animal shelters, the statement added.
The report said that the workers also found 31 sparrows of a protected species in China and released them back into the wild.

It added that China has no laws to prevent cruelty to animals, but suspects can face fines for bird poaching, property theft and violations of animal disease prevention laws.

According to foreign news agencies, the tradition of eating dogs and cats in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces of southern China is thousands of years old.
Humane Society International China Policy expert Dr. Peter Li said in a statement that these two areas of China are hot spots for eating cat meat, while eating cat meat is not part of the culture at all in other areas of China.
The outbreak of the global coronavirus appears to have further reduced the consumption of cat and dog meat, as the disease was linked to a live animal market in the central city of Wuhan.
