In 2013, World Hijab Day (WHD) was founded by Muslim New Yorker Nazma Khan. She designated February 1st as Hijab Day to invite women from different faiths and cultures to experience the hijab.
In 2018, World Hijab Day became a non-profit organization that helped with awareness and education about the concept of hijab. In her interview, Khan emphasized that “hijab is my identity and celebrating my identity is liberating.” While sharing the goals of her movement with Islamic Channel, Khan also said “I envision a world where my sisters can flaunt their hijab with pride, walking on the street without being persecuted for their hijab.”
