World Hijab Day is celebrated annually on February 1st to raise awareness about hijab and dismantle Islamophobia. Hijab is a piece of clothing that Muslim women cover their heads with because it is a practice in the religion Islam. Muslim women wear the hijab for modesty and most importantly, they have the choice to practice the hijab or not. Some Muslim women choose to wear the hijab while others don't, meaning they have a choice, and their decision should be respected.

The Birth of World Hijab Day

In 2013, World Hijab Day (WHD) was founded by Muslim New Yorker Nazma Khan. She designated February 1st as Hijab Day to invite women from different faiths and cultures to experience the hijab. 

In 2018, World Hijab Day became a non-profit organization that helped with awareness and education about the concept of hijab. In her interview, Khan emphasized that “hijab is my identity and celebrating my identity is liberating.” While sharing the goals of her movement with Islamic Channel, Khan also said “I envision a world where my sisters can flaunt their hijab with pride, walking on the street without being persecuted for their hijab.”

Abir El Saghir

Abir El Saghir is Lebanese chef. She shares cooking videos and recipes on her Instagram, TikTok, and Youtube. She also sells clothes for a living in west Bekaa, Lebanon. She won the Female Influencer of the Year Award at Joy Awards 2023.

Soha Mohamed Taha

Soha Mohamed Taha is an Egyptian fashion influencer and entrepreneur. She lives in Dubai, UAE and runs a business by the name Soha MT Collection. The collection features cosmetics, hijabs, beshts, and much more. In addition to being a successful content creator, Taha is also a wife and a mother to two children.  On her Instagram page, she shares various cool and stylish looks featuring her signature blazer outfits, monochromatic overcoats, and sleek dresses. Layering is important to Taha, as a result, her outfits are well-put-together and fresh. 

Omaya Zein

Omaya Zein is a content creator who creates content on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. She is Venezuelan-Palestinian and lives in Florida, USA with her husband. Her content revolves around fashion, makeup, travel, and daily life. Other than content creation, she is about to launch her own business as well. Summer Al Barcha Summer Al Barcha is a Syrian digital creator and entrepreneur based in the US. Her content revolves around modest fashion and when it comes to her personal fashion, Al Barcha is another hijabi queen of layering sporting blazers over dresses or sweater vests over white shirts. In 2022, she started her business Summer Evenings which sells modest dresses and scarves.

Al Barcha made a notable speech on “Modest Fashion in Modern Times” at Fashion Forward Dubai in 2014 and since then gained global recognition, which allowed her to work with brands like Fendi, Nike, and La Prairie. 

Jasmine Fares

Jasmines Fares is a Canadian hijabi influencer who creates content with her husband on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. The couple lives between Dubai and Canada; Fares’ content revolves around fashion and daily life. She also owns an online store FARES, which sells from modest shirts and pants to scarves. Like her brand, Fares sports minimalist fashion with neutral tones and her staple shirt and pants.

Leena Snoubar

Leena Snoubar is a US-based vlogger who creates content about fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. Her outfits also feature a neutral color palette and modest and minimalistic clothing. 

Eileen Lahi

Eileen Lahi is an Estonian hijabi influencer living in Qatar. She creates content about daily life, travel, and modest fashion. Initially, she worked as a primary school teacher in Qatar, but she soon quit that job and became a full content creator. Her modest fashion includes soft and pastel colors with flowy summer dresses, comfy shirts, and pants or denim. She has also received Qatar's Influencer of the Year 2018 Award. 

These hijabi influencers have broken and continue to break stereotypes about hijab as they flourish in their different fields, which shows that hijab is not a symbol of oppression, but a significant part of women's empowerment. They inspire other young hijabis to be confident in what they wear, to own their identities as hijabi women, and to challenge misconceptions about hijab in their communities and beyond.
