French scientist Luc Montagnier, who discovered the HIV virus, has died at the age of 89.

According to foreign media reports, French scientists were being treated in a hospital on the outskirts of Paris.

Montagnier was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2008 for his discovery of the HIV virus that causes AIDS, along with his partner Francois.

Luck Montagnier's success has led to the development of HIV tests and antiretroviral drugs that keep away deadly pathogens.
