The budget for the financial year 2013-14 has allocated Rs 24 billion for public health and Rs 65 billion for the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
A meeting of the National Assembly was held under the chairmanship of Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf in which Federal Minister for Finance Muftah Ismail presented a budget of Rs. 95 trillion for the financial year 23-2022.
Presenting the expenditure figures for higher education during the budget speech, the federal finance minister said that Rs 65 billion has been allocated for the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in the budget for the financial year 2013-14.

Muftah Ismail said that Rs 44 billion has been set aside for development schemes of HEC which is 67% more than last year which is a testament to the government's commitment to the young generation and their commitment to the future. ۔
The Finance Minister said that the HEC budget includes 5,000 benefits for Balochistan and the amalgamated districts.
He said that a separate scholarship scheme is included for the coastal areas of Balochistan, one lakh laptops will be provided to the students of the country on easy installments, modern equipments and facilities will be provided for upgrading engineering and technology education. Funds have also been allocated for this purpose.
Referring to other education projects, the Finance Minister said that Rs. 35 billion has been earmarked to increase the Benazir Scholarship Program to 10 million children.

Muftah Ismail said that Rs 9 billion has been allocated for Benazir Undergraduate Scholarship to 10,000 students.
Presenting the budget data for public health, Muftah Ismail said that adequate amount has been allocated for the health sector in the budget for the financial year 2013-14.
The Finance Minister said that Rs. 24 billion has been set aside for providing better health services to the people.

The Federal Minister said that Rs. 10 billion has been earmarked for tackling climate change in difficult times, including tree planting and improvement of natural environment.
He said that Rs. 11 billion has been allocated for increasing the use of modern machinery in agriculture, laser leveling, innovation in irrigation, supply of quality seeds and export of agricultural products for agriculture and food security.
During his budget speech, the finance minister announced a 15 per cent increase in the salaries of government employees and accepted the long standing demand of the employees to integrate ad hoc relief in the basic pay.
