Outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander Umar Khalid Khorasani along with two other associates were killed in a roadside bomb blast in Afghanistan.

A statement issued by TTP officials said that Umar Khalid Khorasani's car came under attack on Sunday evening near Barmal District of Paktika Province, Afghanistan.

The real name of Umar Khalid Khorasani, who lived in the Mohmand Agency area near the Pak-Afghan border, was Abdul Wali Mohmand.

He urged the Taliban government of Afghanistan to investigate the incident and bring out the facts about the spies, who may be responsible for the death of the TTP commander.

The other two persons killed in the incident were identified as Mufti Hasan and Hafiz Daulat Khan, who were among the TTP commanders who joined ISIS in 2014.

It may be noted that Umar Khalid Khorasani was part of the TTP team that participated in the talks with Pakistani government officials, the Pashtun Jirga and the Ulama who recently visited Afghanistan.

Umar Khalid Khorasani was among the majority TTP members from Mohmand Agency who broke away from the TTP in 2014 and formed a separate group, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaat Ahrar.

He was later suspended by TTP chief Maulvi Fazlullah following the announcement of the group, which included almost all TTP leaders from Mohmand Agency.

He accused the TTP leadership of moving away from the group's ideology.

The group came into the open after Jamaat-ul-Ahrar spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed responsibility for the Wagah border attack in November 2014, in which more than 70 civilians were killed.

The death of the outlawed TTP commander is being described as a blow at a time when he was involved in talks with the Pakistani government.

Omar Khalid Khorasani was wanted by the Pakistani government for his involvement in a series of attacks on security forces, tribal elders and peace committee members in the area.

In July 2017, the Sanctions Committee of the United Nations Security Council approved adding the Jamaat-ul-Ahrar to the asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo list at the request of Pakistan.

On the other hand, in March 2018, the United Nations included the name of Omar Khalid Khorasani in the wanted list of the US State Department's Reward for Justice.

The US had announced a reward of 3 million dollars for providing their information.

It may be recalled that in recent years several leaders of TTP including Maulvi Fazlullah have been killed in Afghanistan where they crossed the border after operations in various areas of tribal areas, Swat and Malakand Division.

Maulvi Fazlullah, the TTP chief in Swat, was killed in a US drone strike in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province in June 2018.

Deaths of TTP leaders in recent years

The TTP had confirmed in January this year that its senior commander Mufti Khalid Balti alias Muhammad Khorasani had been killed in eastern Nangarhar province.

Earlier in July 2016, Umar Mansoor alias Khalifa Mansoor was killed in a US drone strike in Afghanistan, the mastermind behind the 2014 Peshawar Army Public School attack that killed over 150 people, including children.

Apart from the TTP, ISIS Khorasan chief Hafiz Saeed Khan was killed in a US drone strike in Nangarhar province in July 2015.

Similarly, former TTP spokesperson Shahidullah Shahid and 24 other terrorists were also targeted in a US drone strike in Nangarhar in July 2015.

Shahidullah Shahid joined ISIS along with Saeed Khan in October 2014.
