The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has immediately imposed a rain emergency till August 30 in several districts after the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) warned of high-level floods in the Swat River.



This decision was taken on the recommendation of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) while the Flood Forecasting Division has predicted high levels of flooding in the Khwaja Khela and its associated streams and canals in the Swat River.

According to PDMA, 251 people have died and 19,000 houses have been completely destroyed by floods in various areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since June.

In a notification issued by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, the Provincial Emergency Operation Center said that the flood level in the Swat River at Khwaja Khila has been recorded at 227,899 cusecs, which has affected the population living near the river and drains. It can lead to a dangerous situation.

PDMA has issued a letter to the district administrations of Swat, Dir Lower, Malakand, Mohmand, Charsadda, Mardan, Nowshera and Peshawar.

PDMA said that timely aid and medical supplies should be provided to the affected people, availability of food and medicines should also be ensured in the shelters after evacuation of the nearby population.

The authority has directed that local farmers, cattle herders should be warned in advance to move their cattle to safe places.

The letter said that vehicular movement should be restricted on highways adjacent to drains connected to rivers, in any case coordinate with the concerned departments to clean the roads.

Flood warning in Kalabagh and Chashma
The warning issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said that there will be an increase in the flow of water in the Indus River at Kalabagh and Chashma.

The statement said that from 12 pm tomorrow to 12 noon on August 28, the water level may go from 5 lakh 50 thousand cusecs to 7 lakh cusecs.

The meteorological department urged the authorities to take all possible measures to avoid loss of life and property.

Decision to deploy army for relief operations in all four provinces
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that Pakistan Army will be deployed to help the civil administration in the relief work.

In a statement on Twitter, he said that all the provincial governments had requested the deployment of armed forces under Article 245 of the Constitution and the Ministry of Home Affairs had approved it.

He said that military personnel are being deployed to cooperate with the civil administration in relief work in the flood-affected areas.
