In the first match of the Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2022, Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by 4 wickets thanks to the responsible performance of the batsmen.



In the match being played in Sharjah, Sri Lanka captain Dasan Shanaka won the toss and invited Afghanistan to bat first.

Hazratullah Zazai and Rehmanullah Garbaz batted at a blistering pace in the opening overs and pushed the score forward and completed their half-centuries with 3 fours and 4 sixes in 22 balls.

Sri Lanka's Madhushanka tried to slow down Afghanistan by dismissing Hazratullah Zazai for 46, but Garbaz continued to bat.

Rahmanullah Garbaz played an innings of 84 runs off 45 balls with the help of 4 fours and 6 sixes and the team's score reached 139 runs in the 16th over and got out on the ball of Fernando.

Ibrahim Zadran batted responsibly and scored 40 off 38 balls with 2 fours and a six, he was dismissed by Madhushanka.

Afghanistan's fourth out was Mohammad Nabi, who was dismissed by Thekshana after scoring just one run.

Najeebullah Zadran was dismissed for 17 runs, he was run out by the combination of De Silva and Mendes and sent to the pavilion.

Rashid Khan was the last batsman to get out and was run out last ball and his innings consisted of 9 runs.

Afghanistan scored 175 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs.

Madhushanka took the most 2 wickets for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka chased down the target at lightning pace and contributed 60 runs in 6 overs for the first wicket partnership.

Kosal Mendis scored 36 runs in 19 balls with the help of 2 fours and 3 sixes and was dismissed for 62 by Naveen Haq.

Asalinka and Patham took the score to 80 runs in the second wicket, but Nisanka's innings of 35 runs was ended by Mujeebur Rahman caught by Rahmanullah Garbaz.

The Sri Lankan batsmen did not let the run-rate drop and pushed the score forward with the required speed, but Charith Asalinka was dismissed for 8 runs for the third wicket of 94 runs.

Skipper Dasan Shanaka and Gunathilaka took the score to 119 runs in 14 overs as the innings came to an end for the skipper, who had added 10 runs.

Dhanushka Gunathilaka played an important innings of 33 runs off 20 balls with the help of 2 fours and 2 sixes, but Rashid Khan blew his wickets but by the time he had taken the team to a score of 151.

Sri Lanka's incoming batsmen continued to bat with confidence without giving up and new batsman Bhanuka Rajapaksa added 31 runs off just 14 balls with 4 fours and a six to take the team very close to victory.

Sri Lanka were 174 runs off the third ball of the 19th over when Naveen-ul-Haq took the wicket of Rajapaksa, who played an aggressive innings, and needed just one run to win.

Hasaranga de Silva and Karunaratne did not allow any more wickets to fall and scored 179 runs off the first ball of the last over.

Sri Lanka won the first match of the Asia Cup Super Four by scoring 179 runs for 6 wickets and brightened their chances of reaching the final.

On behalf of Afghanistan, Mujeebur Rahman and Naveenul Haq took 2 wickets each.

The man of the match award was given to Afghanistan opener Rehmanullah Garbaz who played a brilliant innings of 84 runs.

The next match of the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup will be played tomorrow between Pakistan and India.

Earlier, Sri Lankan captain Dasan Shanaka said after winning the toss that we have shown good performance in chasing the target and want to repeat the same.

He said that we want to continue the good partnership in the match and that is our focus.

Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi said that we will try to make a good score while batting first.

Talking about the team, he said that he is happy with the performance of the bowlers in the last few matches and hope that they will perform well today.

It should be noted that Afghanistan defeated Sri Lanka in the group match of the Asia Cup.
