The Indian Supreme Court has closed all contempt of court cases against the state of Uttar Pradesh and others following the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1992.
According to a maknews-21, the Supreme Court has closed the final cases of the 3-decade-old Ayodhya dispute, observing that both the petitioner and the defendant have died.
The court said that the underlying case of the land dispute has been decided, rendering the contempt petition null and void.

According to the Bar and Bench portal, a bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abhay S. Oka said that the petition has become ineffective in light of the Supreme Court's 2019 judgment in which Hindu parties have been awarded ownership of the disputed land.
The bench also rejected the plea to replace the deceased petitioner with judicial assistant.
Despite the Uttar Pradesh government's assurance to the Supreme Court that the Babri Masjid would be protected, it was demolished in December 1992.

This led to a contempt of court case against the UP government, and in 2019 the Supreme Court handed over the disputed site to Hindu nationalists.
In September 2020, a special CBI court in Lucknow acquitted former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, BJP leader Murali Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti and several others in the Babri Masjid demolition case. was acquitted.
The judgment said that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to produce any conclusive evidence to prove any collusion that led to the demolition of the mosque.
The special court said there was no documentary evidence to show that there was any conspiracy or provocation to demolish the mosque.
