Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party leader Raja Pervez Ashraf has been elected unopposed as the Speaker of the National Assembly.

Following the resignation of Speaker Asad Qaiser and Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri, the meeting was chaired by PML-N leader Ayaz Sadiq, a member of the panel of chairpersons and former Speaker National Assembly.

Presenting item number 5 of the agenda of the assembly session, Ayaz Sadiq announced that Raja Pervez Ashraf was the only candidate for the post of Speaker National Assembly whose nominees were Khurshid Shah and Naveed Qamar and thus he was elected unopposed.

Raja Pervez Ashraf has become the 22nd Speaker of the National Assembly and Ayaz Sadiq administered the oath of office to him.

After assuming the office of Speaker, Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf said that he was very grateful to Allah Almighty for holding the prestigious position of Speaker National Assembly.

He said that he was deeply grateful to PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari, Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Leader of the House Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and all other parliamentary leaders and members of Parliament for electing him unopposed to this post.



He said that he was happy to be elected as the Speaker of the Diamond Jubilee of Pakistan.

The resolution was moved by PML-N National Assembly member Shaza Fatima Khawaja, according to which the Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly was verbally and physically attacked. The National Assembly condemns this barbarism.


Mufti Asad Mahmood objects to resignations of PTI members

Speaking in the House, Mufti Asad Mahmood, Member National Assembly, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), said, "I heartily congratulate you on being elected Speaker. Millions of people have trusted us."

He said that the whole world knows that PTI has resigned, how can one person accept the resignations of the whole party.

He said that inshallah we will also win in the Punjab Assembly. After the success of the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan, our madrassas and mosques were attacked.

He demanded that the record of the buffaloes sold by the Prime Minister House and the details of the gifts of the treasury be presented in the House.



PTI members did not want to resign, pressure was exerted, Ayaz Sadiq

Supporting Asad Mehmood, Ayaz Sadiq said that it is true that PTI members had submitted their collective resignations to the National Assembly Secretariat in 2014, in which we sought help from the decision of the Supreme Court and used our minds.

He said that one night 9 out of 33 members called me and said that if you want to accept resignation then we want to come in the house, to which I told them that I accepted resignation for these reasons. Not doing

Ayaz Sadiq said that then we called these members one by one so that their signatures would be confirmed and it would be known that they made this decision without any pressure but no one came, only one of them Confirmed resignation. And he said that we will return the salaries but no one returned the full salary but returned half the salary while the 2 members did not even give the one in which Imran Khan Niazi was.

Ayaz Sadiq said that the resignations of the members have just come on cyclo style paper while according to the rules they should be handwritten, besides they have not been confirmed individually.

He said that now you should see the resignations of the Speaker and call them as per the decision of Islamabad High Court and give them a chance.

"I am fasting and standing under the name of Allah. I have received calls from many members of PTI that we do not want to resign but we are being pressured," he said.

On which the newly elected Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf directed the National Assembly Secretariat that the resignations should be dealt with as per previous rolling and examples and all the resignations should be de-sealed and presented before me so that we can take action as per law.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari and other important leaders.

Later, Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf adjourned the National Assembly session till 12 noon on Monday, April 18, 2022.

It may be recalled that former Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser had resigned from his post at a time when he was scheduled to vote on a no-confidence motion against former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

On the other hand, Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri today resigned from his post before voting on the no-confidence motion against him.
