In Yemen's city of Aden, al-Qaeda's attack killed 21 separatist fighters and six militants from al-Qaeda's Yemeni branch, dealing a major blow to months of peace in the war-torn country.



According to the report of the foreign news agency 'AFP' published in the Dawn newspaper, Yemeni government sources say that on Tuesday Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) attacked the United Nations Security Council in the southern city of Abyan in Yemen. Attacked a hideout occupied by Belt group.

The attack was carried out after the jihadist group released a video of a UN worker abducted from Abyan 6 months ago a few days ago.

A government official said on condition of anonymity that 2 security sources confirmed that 21 (security belt) officers, including one security officer, and 6 al-Qaeda fighters were killed in the nearly 3-hour battle.

It should be noted that Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since the capture of the capital Sanaa by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in September 2014, after which the Saudi-led forces invaded Yemen to support the local government.

Extremists loyal to Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and the militant group Daesh are wreaking havoc in the country.

The security belt, considered a separatist force in southern Yemen, has played a decisive role in the fight against the jihadists, forcing them to retreat from towns to the countryside.

The attacks came as a ceasefire between the Houthis and forces supporting the ousted government continues.

Northern groups opposed to the Houthis are supporting the re-establishment of southern Yemen due to the division.

A UN worker was abducted
